Van Beinum’s interpretations rise to the top of the heap time and time again. His renditions just seem perfect….the right mixtures of sparkle, mystery and elan for each piece. And the Amsterdam Concertgebouw is in its finest form. A very satisfying album. Having heard a number of his recordings over the years, I have the utmost respect for Van Beinum’s all-too-small recorded legacy. A pity more still hasn’t made it to CD. He was not a showman, but helped shape the post-Mengelberg Concertgebouw into the world-class orchestra it has remained ever since, and delivered timeless performances. He died all too young.
